The course aims to provide students with competence in understanding and using basic Mandarin, that is, to enable students to use Mandarin language with regard to the four language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking – at the basic level.

Course Outline

• Background Information on Mandarin language such as a brief description of the Mandarin language: its historical development and present status-quo as well as the special features of the language.
• Developing competence in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing by understandign the workings of the language
• Engaging in language tasks as follows:
  • Listening Comprehension
  • Conversation
  • Translation
  • Understanding graphic stimulus
